Gutters
Gutters catch the water at the eave and carry it to a place where it can drain away from the house, and a house without gutters often shows stains along the base of its walls. Much of the soil in the region is clay, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so water beside a house matters, and even a short extension at the downspout changes where the water goes.
